Mat has worn many hats in the District since he joined as an intern in 2017. During the construction season, he spends most of his time inspecting construction sites for permit compliance, as well as reviewing permits and working with permitees on their applications. In the winter, he helps out with data processing and work on upcoming projects. He holds a BS in Wildlife Biology with a minor in Entomology from the University of Minnesota, and worked a variety of jobs prior to college, including as a baker, chef, and management at a cooperative grocery store.
Mat's favorite part of his job is being able to spend most of his time outdoors. In his free time you can find him hiking and taking his kayak out exploring on small streams and seldom visited lakes.
There's a small floating bog hidden on the edge of Hyland Park Preserve that is only accessible by hiking in for a couple miles. It quakes and trembles as you walk across it, and it's filled with rare wetland plants, mushrooms and small aquatic creatures in the many pools.
